On the night of Christmas (January 6th) and until January 9, in western Ukraine, each family is waiting for the visit of a wassailers with vertep. Especially this tradition has survived in the countryside.
Vertep is a kind of folk theater, during which the plot of the miraculous birth of Jesus Christ is reproduced. This tradition came to Ukrainians from the West, but, it turned here into the genre of national-folk theater. Unlike Western Europe, where the vertep has perfomed a religious function and developed in the heart of the church, in Ukraine it was connected with the culture of peasants.
It differs in every region of Western Ukraine. He is also called „shopka“, „yaslka“, „star(zirka)“, „vodinya kozy“, etc.
In the Ternopil region, the Christmas vertep occurs in the form of a „live vertep“, where roles are performed by people. This is the later kind of verten.
Participants of the vertept prepare a religious show beforehand, divide roles, teach poetry, and prepare costumes. Children (6-15 years) and young people form bands with vertep. Roles are performed only by the boys.
Acting persons usually are Angel, Shepherds, Three Kings, Jew Moshko and his wife Sura, Devil, Death, Herod King and his warriors, and others.
Angel is a guy that is dressed in white. The angel carries a Star in the vertep. He is a forerunner of the birth of the Messiah, so besides the star in his hand there may be a bell. Behind him should be beautiful wings, and above the head should be a nymb.
The three kings are mainly strong young guys or adult men with beards. They carries to the Newborn gifts: gold, incense and myrrh.
Herod’s King is the main negative character of the vertep that hunts for Jesus and wants to kill him. For this character also choose a strong guy with low voice.
Jew or Gypsy is a witty, restless, cunning and skillful character who accompanies Herod and tries to lure something useful or delicious from the public. He is definitely a positive character, because his turns and twists are the most comforting to the audience and adds a tempo to the measured performance.
Shepherd or group of shepherds – dressed like peasant people, with bags and sticks. The role of shepherds is to remind the audience that it was they whom Angel appeared at first on the road and announced the birth of the Messiah.
The devil is a comic and elusive character who takes Herod’s soul into hell. While the play continues, the devil can touch beautiful girls, allow them to tear himself for a ponytail or grimace.
Death is a high and silent person in the play and kills Herod for his sins.
The Cossack symbolizes the Ukrainian hero.
The plot of vertep drama is traditionally finished happily. The audience claps, gives the artists money or candies. The band does not stand still – it goes with Christmas carol! Especially children wait for vertep.
Різдвяний вертеп. Галицькі традиції.
В ніч на Різдво (6 січня) і аж до 9 січня на Західній Україні кожна сім’я чекає в гості колядників з вертепом. Особливо ця традиція збереглася у сільській місцевості.
Вертеп – це вид народного театру, під час якого відтворюється сюжет чудесного народження Ісуса Христа. Ця традиція прийшла до українців із Заходу, однак, тут перетворилася у жанр національно-фольклорного театру. На відміну від Західної Європи, де вертеп тривалий час виконував релігійну функцію і розвивався в лоні церкви, в Україні він з самого початку був пов’язаний з культурою простого народу.
В кожній області Західної України він різний. Його ще називають «шопка», «яселка», «зірка», «водіння кози» та ін.
На Тернопільщині Різдвяний вертеп проходить у формі «живого вертепу», де ролі виконують люди. Це більш пізній вид у порівнянні з вертепним ляльковим театром.
Учасники вертепу готують заздалегідь релігійну виставу, розподіляють ролі, вчать вірші, готують костюми. Гурти з вертепом утворюють як діти (6–15 років), так і молодь. Ролі виконують лише хлопці.
Дійовими особами зазвичай є Ангел, Пастушки, Три Царі, Жид Мошко та його дружина Сура, Чорт, Смерть, Цар Ірод та його воїни, козак та ін. Інші герої з’являються на вимогу часу і за смаками самих вертепників.
Ангел – одягнений у біле хлопець. Ангел у вертепі носить зірку. Він передвісник народження Месії, тому окрім зірки в його руці може бути дзвіночок. За спиною в Ангела мають бути гарні крила, а над головою – німб.
Три царі – переважно дужі хлопці або дорослі мужчини із бородами. Вони несуть Новонародженому дари: золото, ладан і мирру.
Цар Ірод – головний негативний персонаж вертепу, який полює за Ісусом і хоче його вбити. Для цього персонажа також обирають дужого і непохитного хлопця із низьким тембром голосу.
Жид або Циган – дотепний, непосидючий, хитрий і вправний персонаж, який супроводжує Ірода і намагається виманити в публіки щось корисне чи смачненьке. Він, безумовно, позитивний персонаж, адже своїми викрутасами найбільше потішає публіку і додає темпу розміреній виставі.
Пастух або гурт пастушків – одягнені по-селянськи люди, з торбинами і палицями.
Роль пастушків – нагадати глядачам, що це саме їм першим з’явився Ангел у дорозі та сповістив про народження Месії.
Чорт – комічний і невловимий персонаж, який забирає душу Ірода в пекло. А поки триває вистава, чортик може чіпатися до гарних дівчат, дозволяти поторсати себе за хвостик або кривлятися.
Смерть – висока і мовчазна персона у виставі, вбиває Ірода за його гріхи.
Сюжет вертепної драми закінчується традиційно – щасливо. Глядачі-слухачі плескають, обдаровують артистів грошима чи смаколиками. Гурт не стоїть на місці – він іде тішити інших колядуючи! Особливо радісно чекають на вертеп діти.
